The Sempervirens Story
a Century of Preserving California's Ancient Redwood Forest
by Willie Yaryan and Denzil & Jennie Verardo

This beautiful book is a history of redwood preservation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It describes the founding of Sempervirens Club in 1900 and chronicles the fight to save the Big Basin redwoods and establish California's first state park. You'll learn about the pioneering conservationists who created the organization, the 19th Century timber barons of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the story of Castle Rock State Park, and the 100-year effort that has succeeded in preserving over 21,000 acres of redwood forest. The book also touches on the work of the modern day Sempervirens Fund. It is filled with beautiful color photographs as well as historical black & white photos that are both charming and insightful.
